I'm not all that surprised. Linus actually isn't as much of a Linux zealot as one might expect.

I may update my studio pc to Windows 7... just waiting for Vista-Windows7 bugs to be dealt with before I do so.

Yeah, Linus isn't a zealot like Richard Stahlman is with the free software foundation who actually believe it is unethical to charge for software.

There's actually a story behind that picture though. Linus was in Japan for a huge linux conference that had been planned for a long time. Microsoft decided to launch on the same day as that conference so a lot of the linux guys got all worked up claiming it was a massive Microsoft conspiracy to steal the thunder from the linux conference. So some journalist took linus over to the Windows 7 display at a store across the street and asked the guy to try and sell Windows to linus. As a joke, he took the picture.

Linus actually isn't a huge fan of where linux is currently headed. He feels its far too bloated now as well, but its truly out of his hands. But like Drach said, he has good humor about the whole thing. He doesn't have a problem with people charging for software, he just wanted to make his stuff free. Which was highly commendable.

Richard Stallman is a communist scumbag... but he DID have some good ideas about free software. The important distinction to draw is the difference between freedom, as in price; and freedom as in liberty. The type of freedom that's most important to most open source advocates is LIBERTY, not necessarily price. The GNU license actually explicitly says that you can charge for software. The main thrust is that you have to make the source code available so that others can improve the software. That prevents companies from including undesirable "features" and restrictions, the way Apple and Microsoft are notorious for doing.

So there are a lot of good concepts that come from open source, but zealots like Stallman hurt the cause as much as they help most of the time.

I LOVE Linux... specifically Linux Mint.

I run it on another pc in the house here. It's great and solid. If I had a pc for personal use... I would most likely convert to Linux Mint.

My studio is pc based... as is all the plugins, etc. I'm kinda stuck until I go Mac in the studio.

I have windows 7 on my laptop now. And no I havent taken the time to read anything said, just cause Im tired right now LOL.
I have found it to be a very solid OS, took me a little bit to find my way around, but once I got use to the new start system, SWEET! Also seems to be a lighter opperating system, could totally be wrong here but it just seems to not use as much memory or stuff. lol

It definitely is, its one of the defining characteristics. To use all the new graphical features its still going to take more resources than XP but not nearly as bad as Vista. After I put it on my laptop I had to upgrade to 2 GB of ram to get satisfactory output, but that's not too bad at all.

I've heard nothing but good from friends who are now using Windows 7... sounds like folks are enjoying it a lot.

It is very good for the most part. Funny story though, for one class we had one of our graphics art students in one of our IT classes because her instructor quit and we haven't had a replacement. Since she only needed one class to graduate they let her take one of ours. She had never used a PC before and was lost trying to figure out where everything was. We started demonstrating all the new cool features of Windows 7 to her and she kept going, "Oh that's nice, but my Mac has done that for years." to everyone of them.

It seems like the PC is finally catching up to the Mac in UI support.
